Excel Engineer
Role Overview
Join our Technology Solutions team in a front-office facing role supporting investment professionals through Excel engineering, workflow automation, and hands-on user engagement. You will partner with PMs, analysts, traders, and technology teams to build and support robust Excel-based tools that improve workflow efficiency, data access, and analytical capabilities across the investment process.
Key responsibilities include:
- User Enablement & Support: Support investment professionals using Excel-based tools through troubleshooting, training, and day-to-day user engagement.
- Excel Application Engineering: Design, develop, and maintain Excel-based applications, models, and add-ins using C#, .NET, VBA, and Excel add-in technologies.
- Workflow Optimization & Best Practices: Improve workbook and add-in performance, including calculation efficiency, memory usage, and data access patterns and promote best practices for Excel model design.
- Data Integration & Automation: Develop automation and data integrations across Excel workflows and underlying data platforms.
- Incident Management & Continuous Improvement: Investigate production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and improve diagnostics, logging, and support tooling.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with investment professionals and central technology teams to identify workflow improvements, prioritize enhancements, and deliver scalable solutions.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Strong experience developing and supporting Excel-based applications, analytical models, or front-office tooling within an investment or financial services environment.
- Deep understanding of Excel workbook design, calculation behavior, performance optimization, and stability in complex user workflows.
- Strong C# and .NET development skills, including experience building Excel integrations, automation, or add ins; VBA experience is helpful.
- Experience working in a highly user-facing role, partnering with PMs, analysts, traders, or other business users.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose production issues and communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience with SQL and data integration across enterprise data platforms; Python is a plus.
- Familiarity with Excel add-in frameworks such as Excel-DNA, Add-in Express, or similar technologies.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience supporting Excel add-ins and Office deployments in enterprise Windows environments.
- Experience diagnosing issues with third-party Excel add-ins (e.g. Bloomberg, Visible Alpha) used in financial workflows (e.g., market data, research, and productivity tools). Familiarity with AI/Office add-ins (e.g. Claude for Office) is a plus.
- Familiarity with Microsoft technologies such as Office 365, SharePoint, and Power BI.
- Experience with scripting languages such as PowerShell or Bash.
Education, Training & Experience:
- 3+ years of relevant experience within an investment bank, asset manager, hedge fund, or related software provider.
- Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Finance, or a related field.
