Meet the Team
Core to the health and growth of our business, Millennium's Information Technology group builds flexible, scalable technology and advanced proprietary systems that power the firm's active, multi-manager platform. Within IT, the Risk Technology team owns the platforms that produce the firm's official VaR, stress, and risk analytics, partnering closely with risk managers, quants, and other technologists across New York, London, Singapore, and Bengaluru.
We are looking for a builder and an owner: someone with an entrepreneurial spirit and a can-do attitude who is ready to step up into leadership. You should think like a front-office technologist — comfortable working directly with risk managers, quants, and other technologists — take pride in owning problems end to end, and be eager to drive change and put AI to work across the engineering lifecycle.
What You'll Do
- Take responsibility for the design, delivery, and reliability of the systems you lead — from requirements and design through implementation, deployment, and production support.
- Guide the day-to-day work of a team of around three engineers; review code and designs, help teammates ramp up on the codebase and domain, and foster a culture of ownership and quality.
- Design and build well-structured, scalable, low-latency services; make sound technical trade-offs and help uphold engineering standards and best practices.
- Partner with risk managers, quants, and other technologists across New York, London, Singapore, and Bengaluru to understand requirements, agree priorities, and deliver solutions that matter to the business.
- Keep the team focused and accountable, communicate clearly and concisely to technical and business audiences, and see work through to completion.
- Challenge the status quo, propose better approaches, and adopt AI-assisted development and modern tooling to raise the quality and pace of delivery.
- Build robust, testable, well-observed Java services and streaming components; monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve production issues to protect data integrity and performance.
What You Bring
- 6+ years of professional software development experience, with strong, recent, hands-on expertise in Java (Core Java, collections, concurrency, JVM fundamentals; Java 17+).
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related quantitative discipline.
- Some experience leading or mentoring engineers — as a senior/lead developer, tech lead, or similar — with a genuine appetite to grow into a people-leadership role, and a track record of owning features or components end to end, from design through production.
- Solid understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns, and multithreaded/distributed systems; experience building scalable, reliable services, with exposure to event-streaming pipelines (e.g., Kafka) valued.
- Good stakeholder and communication skills, with the confidence to engage directly with a demanding front-office audience.
- Relational SQL database development experience (e.g., Postgres, SQL Server), comfort on the Unix/Linux command line, and familiarity with CI/CD (Jenkins), Git, and modern DevOps practices.
- An entrepreneurial, can-do mindset — comfortable with ambiguity, biased toward action, and eager to invent and improve.
- Desirable: front-end experience (TypeScript/JavaScript, Angular); understanding of financial instruments and risk concepts (VaR, stress, sensitivities), with exposure to equities, credit, rates, or derivatives; cloud experience (AWS: EC2, S3, Aurora, Redshift, etc.); and hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools.
