About the data

  • Roles come from SEC Forms 3, 4 and 5, which directors and officers file when they join a company and when they trade its stock. People who do not file those forms, such as most employees, are not counted.
  • A role counts while the person's newest filing at that company is within 12 months of the newest filing in the data, so people who left drop out within a year, and directors who did not trade or receive stock in that time are missing.
  • A company's connections are the other S&P 500 companies it shares at least one person with, so one director on four boards links all four. Lines count companies, not people; thicker lines mean more people.
  • A company and its former parent often share people after a spin-off (FedEx and FedEx Freight, GE and GE HealthCare). These links are marked as a former parent or spin-off.
  • The layout places linked companies near each other; position and distance carry no other meaning. More on the method.
