The D. E. Shaw group seeks a skilled senior engineer to join its Systems team and lead the evolution and modernization of the firm’s virtualization platform. This individual contributor role offers the chance to operate within a mature production setting while driving thoughtful change through evaluation, design, and execution in a collaborative and engaging work environment. Responsibilities: Own and maintain current virtualization platforms and storage solutions in our production environment, ensuring system availability, performance, and resource optimization. Lead the technical exploration of “what’s next”, including researching alternatives, running proof-of-concepts, and defining migration paths from current platforms. Develop automation and tooling to improve reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency. Plan and execute virtualization and storage migrations with cross-functional teams. Who We're Looking For: At least ten years of hands-on experience building and supporting server virtualization platforms in production environments, with a solid understanding of availability, performance, and resource management. Deep expertise in at least one major virtualization platform (VMware, Hyper-V, or KVM-based platforms); experience with multiple platforms is a strong plus. Background working with enterprise storage systems and SAN technologies, including relevant storage protocols, along with experience using at least one software-defined storage platform. Familiarity with evolving virtualization and storage environments as part of a broader technical strategy, whether driven by hardware refreshes, cost considerations, or vendor changes. Excellent communication, organization, and time-management skills, with the ability to operate independently and drive initiatives forward. Comfort asking questions and demonstrating intellectual honesty about knowledge gaps while owning large, complex initiatives. Experience with programming languages such as Python and PowerShell is required; a degree in computer science or another technical discipline is preferred.
